Malaria remains a major global health threat, with Sub-Saharan Africa—particularly children and pregnant women—most affected. Despite life-saving interventions like bed nets, improved diagnostics, and antimalarial drugs, transmission persists in high-burden areas.

Biostatistics is transforming complex malaria data into actionable insights. Researchers such as Evalyne Nyambura (SSACAB PhD fellow based at one of the SSACAB collaborating sites, KEMRI WELLCOME TRUST, Kenya) are studying parasite genetic diversity to improve vaccine design. While current vaccines reduce severe disease, their moderate efficacy reflects limited coverage of diverse parasite variants. Her work aims to support the development of broader, more effective vaccines.

At the same time, Edson Mwebesa (SSACAB PhD fellow based at one of the SSACAB collaborating sites, MOI University, Kenya) highlights the importance of human behaviour in prevention. His research in Uganda shows that trusted, community-based messaging is more effective than mass media in increasing the use of insecticide-treated bed nets. Together, these findings show that ending malaria will require both improved vaccines and stronger strategies to ensure prevention tools are widely and consistently used.
