Two CHP students attend symposium on community health workers and their contribution towards the sustainable development goals

Two CHP students, Faith Mambulu and Shehnaz Munshi, presented at the first International Symposium on Community Health Workers in Kampala, Uganda.  The Symposium theme was Contribution of Community Health Workers in attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals. The Symposium had an attendance of over 450 participants from 22 countries who took part in in-depth discussions and knowledge sharing of how different successful models, methods and approaches have been used to strengthen Community Health Worker (CHW) programmes globally.

Faith presented a component of my PhD research titled: Exploring the Role of Community Health Work within South Africa’s Healthcare Referral Systems for Children with Malnutrition. She discussed the roles of community health workers in identification, stabilisation, referral and rehabilitation of under-fives with malnutrition in two districts of north West Province. Using the Walt and Gilson policy triangle; limitations in CHWs scope of practice, capacity and operational structures were highlighted along with policy implications.
